TIJUANA, Baja California - Working in the United States while living in Mexico is possible for those who have a Green Card through the Commuter Program.

Just in Tijuana, it is estimated that 25,000 people are risking their Green Card be crossing into the United States every day to wrok, said the head of the Binational Commission of the Tijuana Development Council.

"This program provides an opportunity to live in Tijuana and work in San Diego, in a manner which is 100% authorized by US immigration authorities, and we think this provides tranquility," he said.

Thos with a Green Card, he suggested, must reside permanently in the United States, but many do no comply.

Additionally, a person in the Commuter Program has the opportunity to ask for a Sentri card, and to cross more quickly.

"Many of the people who work in the United States and live in Tijuana have to get in line at 3AM, 4AM, 5AM to get to work on time, and this impacts the quality of life," he said.

One of the disadvantages of the Commuter Program, is that one cannot apply for US citizenship, where those with a Green Card can.
