2 Texans rescued after being kidnapped in Mexico, held for ransom
#1
Two kidnapped Texans who were held for ransom in Mexico have been rescued, officials say.

The Texans, whose names were not released, traveled to Nuevo Leon on Feb. 17. They lost contact with their families in the U.S. the next day. On Feb. 19, their relatives started getting ransom demands, the Nuevo Leon prosecutors office said in a written statement.

A tip received Feb. 20 pointed members of an anti-kidnapping unit to the location of the suspected abductors, officials said.

The two Texans were rescued Saturday in Juarez, a suburb of the capital city Monterrey, and the suspects were taken into custody. The Texans have returned to the United States.

The U.S. Embassy in Mexico City said Monday that it was "aware of reports of two U.S. citizens kidnapped and later rescued" but did not elaborate, The Associated Press reported.

Nuevo Leon is one of 11 states in Mexico that the U.S. State Department has given a Level 3 or "reconsider travel" rating to as part of a travel advisory issued in January.

The country as a whole has a Level 2 rating from the department, meaning Americans should "exercise increased caution" because of crime concerns. Five of the 31 states have a Level 4 or "do not travel" warning.
