Two Veracruz mayors assassinated this week
Two mayors were killed this week in the state of Veracruz, one in a gangland execution and the other during a suspected robbery.

On Monday, 30 armed and masked men approached the home of the mayor-elect of Hidalgotitlán and demanded he leave the house, threatening to kill him and his family if he did not comply.

When Santana Cruz Bahena refused to leave, the men entered the home, dragged him out and killed him. No one else was hurt in the attack, believed to have been carried out by fuel thieves, or huachicoleros.

The New Alliance Party politician was to take office on January 1.

The second incident took place last night in the municipality of Banderilla, near the state capital Xalapa. Police discovered the bodies of Ixhuatlán Mayor Víctor Manuel Espinoza Tolentino and his wife in a pickup truck. The other bodies were on the road nearby.

The state Attorney General’s office is treating the case as a robbery.

“The government of Veracruz state deeply regrets this crime, and in coordination with federal agencies will reinforce security operations in the greater Xalapa area,” said the Attorney General’s office in a statement.

At least six mayors have been assassinated this year and more than 100 in the last decade, according to the Mexican Mayors Association.
