The 39-year-old University of British Columbia student found dead on a Mexican beach was stabbed and burned.

The bodies of Ximena Osegueda and her boyfriend, Alejandro Honorio Santamaria, were discovered party buried in the sand at a beach in Huatulco, in the state of Oaxaca, according to local media reports.

Both had been stabbed in the neck and set on fire, according to state attorney general Manuel de Jesus Lopez, reports Vancouver radio station News 1130.

Osegueda, originally from Mexico City, went missing Dec. 13, Mexican media reported.

Meanwhile, a Facebook group, entitled Memorial Ximena Osegueda Magana, has been put up in her memory.

The PhD student's profile on the university website said she had been "investigating the foundational myth of Huatulco."

"I am looking at how this myth has morphed from its first publication, in the 17th century, until today," she wrote.

Her research interests included colonial studies, post-colonial studies, cultural studies and Latin American colonial travel literature, her UBC profile shows.

Osegueda is the second Canadian to be killed in Mexico this week. Robin Wood, 57, of Salt Spring, B.C., was shot and killed during an alleged home invasion, reportedly at a friend's place where he was staying in Melaque.
