TIJUANA, Baja California - 2017 is now the year with the greatest number of homicides in the history of Tijuana, even when compared to 2016, which had been the bloodiest year, as murders have increased 90%.

There were a total of 1,734 homicides.
That figure of 1,734 is only for what the Mexicans call "homicidios dolosas" or murders. There are another 150 or so "homicidios culposas," which is criminal manslaughter. The US combines those two figures when it reports homicides as they are both homicides.

With a population of 1,641,570, Tijuana ends 2017 with a homicide rate north of 115 per 100,000 inhabitants. For comparison, right across the fence in San Diego, the homicide rate was 3.5 per 100,000.
