█ Lynda Young, 50, a Woodstock-area woman who became ill while travelling in Mexico, has died in a London, Ont. hospital.
Young had been flown back to Ontario by air ambulance from a Puerto Vallarta hospital on Jan. 21. She had been put into an induced coma in Mexico after her condition worsened.
She reportedly had the H1N1 flu virus, which developed into a serious lung infection while she and her partner, Su Lyttle, and several of their children were in Mexico for Christmas break.
█ CANCUN, Mexico – A Canadian nurse says the shark that attacked her in Mexico tried to pull her under the water.
Speaking for the first time about her ordeal off Cancun on Monday, Nicole Moore, 38, says the shark bit down on her arm “pretty good.”
Moore tells radio station CKLW in Windsor, Ont., she was in shallow water when some men nearby started yelling at her.
She says she felt a bump, then a bite on her left thigh, and knew right away it was a shark.
The married mother of two from Orangeville, Ont., says she grabbed the shark’s nose and started running to try to get out of the water.
She is currently recovering in a Mexican hospital from serious injuries to her upper thigh, lower leg and her left arm.
█ A couple from Calgary has died after being swept away by a powerful wave in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.
The pair was swimming near a beach known for its strong currents with several family members when a powerful wave struck and dragged them out to sea.
Dale McDougall, 63, and his wife Linda, 54, were swimming off of Divorce Beach when the wave hit.
Family members caught the attention of nearby boats and they were able to pull Linda McDougall from the ocean. Paramedics at the beach started resuscitation, but she later died at a local hospital.
Authorities say the Mexican Navy pulled Dale McDougall’s body from the ocean.
