Malaysia’s religious police have detained 80 Muslims in hotels as part of a Valentine’s Day crackdown to prevent pre-marital sex, officials said. The arrests were made in the central state of Selangor where the Islamic Religious Department had warned Muslims during Friday sermons against observing the Western celebration as it could erode their faith.
The detained couples will be charged under the state’s Syariah Criminal Offence Enactment 1995. If found guilty, they will be fined 3,000 Malaysian ringgit ($983) or sentenced to two years jail. Another 61 Muslims were sent for counselling after the raids on Monday.
Islamic authorities in Muslim-majority Malaysia have been conducting raids on Valentine’s Day after an edict was issued in 2005 banning Muslims from celebrating the occasion.
Muzzammil Hassan (left) receives award from Council on American-Islamic Relations
A jury in western New York deliberated for only an hour on Monday before finding a television producer, who ran a cable studio designed to promote understanding of his Muslim culture, guilty of beheading his wife.
Muzzammil Hassan used two hunting knives to kill Aasiya Hassan on Feb 12, 2009, six days after she filed for divorce, prosecutors said.
Hassan claimed during the trial that he was a battered spouse in fear for his own life. Hassan, 46, acted as his own attorney.
Aasiya Hassan, 37, and the mother of two, was found stabbed and decapitated at the Bridges TV offices in Orchard Park, a suburb of Buffalo.
The couple launched Bridges TV in 2004 with a mission to show Muslims in a positive light.
The Hamas armed wing claimed responsibility for the killing of four Jewish settlers near Hebron on Tuesday on the eve of a new round of U.S.-backed peace talks. Thousands of Palestinians took to the streets of the West Bank and Gaza to celebrate the attack, ululating and passing out candy.
In Israel, thousands of Israeli settlers attended the funeral of Yitzhak and Tali Ames, Kochava Even Haim and Avishai Schindler.
Palestinians in the West Bank celebrate the ambush murder of four Jews
No representatives of the “religion of peace”, has stepped forward to condemn the attack. Hamas spokesmen in Gaza praised the killings. Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayad said the incident contradicts “Palestinian national interests,” but didn’t even make a half-hearted attempt to condemn it.
RIYADH, Saudi Arabia – A conservative Saudi cleric was told to stop giving unauthorized edicts after he called for a boycott of a supermarket chain that employs women as cashiers, the office of the kingdom’s most senior religious leader said Thursday.
The move is the first public reprimand of a prominent cleric following a royal decree that limits the issuance of fatwas to the country’s most senior group of clerics. Fatwas are religious edicts that provide guidance in matters of everyday life to pious Muslims.
Sheik Youssef al-Ahmed had urged people not to shop at Panda Supermarket because women there work in jobs that allow for the mingling of the sexes, which the cleric said was a violation of Islamic law.
Saudi media reported that al-Ahmed’s fatwa forced the supermarket management to reassign 11 of its women employees to other positions on Wednesday. The chain could not be reached for comment.
Grand Mufti Sheik Abdul-Aziz Al Sheik’s office said Thursday he had summoned al-Ahmed and ordered the cleric to refrain from issuing unauthorized fatwas.
Now wait a minute. Let’s think this through. If Muslim women cannot mingle with men, then Imane Boudlalshould not be working as a restaurant greeter for Disney, right? Then Disney only helped her to follow the religious tenets of Islam by offering to place her in the back room, right?
It is all becoming clear to me now, Disney is a pro-Islamic company and Imane Boudlal is suing Disney for enforcing on her Islamic law regarding seperation of the sexes. Who knew?
We are in the Muslim month of Ramadan. Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. It is the Islamic month of fasting, in which participating Muslims refrain from eating and drinking from dawn until sunset. Fasting is intended to teach Muslims about patience, humility, and spirituality. It is a time for Muslims to fast for the sake of God and to offer more prayer than usual. During Ramadan, Muslims ask forgiveness for past sins, pray for guidance and help in refraining from everyday evils, and try to purify themselves through self-restraint and good deeds. So what is the score so far in this holiest of months?
KABUL, Afghanistan — Taliban militants in northern Afghanistan stoned a young couple to death for adultery, which a rights group said was the first confirmed use of the punishment here since the hardline Islamist regime was ousted in 2001.
The Taliban-ordered killing comes at a time when international rights groups have raised worries that attempts to negotiate with the Taliban to bring peace to Afghanistan could mean a step backward for human rights in the country. When the Islamist extremists ruled Afghanistan, women were not allowed to leave their houses without a male guardian, and public killings for violations of their harsh interpretation of the Quran were common.
Nobody has conquered Afghanistan since Alexander the Great. Fulano has come to the conclusion that the US is going about the Afghanistan war the wrong way. Our goals cannot be achieved. We chased out the Taliban, and we are trying to establish a moderate, democratic government. But you have to have a people who are ready and able for such a government. Afghan’s are not. They’re tribal. A federal government and a nation of Afghanistan is just a faint image to them. They have no national pride nor identity. Family and tribe are all that counts.
A realistic strategy is for the US to just declare victory and leave. Yes, I know that in a few years the entire country will be radicalized again under some fascists waiving the Qur’an. Every few years we will have to spend a couple of weeks bombing them back into their caves. As long as the US can protect our homeland from these asshats, we should be OK. Besides, the real threat to the US is Pakistan. They have the Bomb.
Wafa Sultan is an author and well known critic of Muslim society and Islam. She trained as a psychiatrist in Syria and emigrated to the United States in 1989. She is now a naturalized citizen and resides in Los Angeles, California. Sultan has become notable since the September 11, 2001 attacks for her participation in Middle East political debates, with Arabic essays that circulated widely and some television appearances on Al Jazeera and CNN.
On February 21, 2006, she took part in Al Jazeera’s weekly 45-minute discussion program The Opposite Direction. She spoke from Los Angeles, arguing with host Faisal al-Qassem and guest Ibrahim Al-Khouli about Samuel P. Huntington’s Clash of Civilizations theory. A six minute composite video of her remarks was subtitled and widely circulated by MEMRI on blogs and through e-mail. The New York Times estimated that it has been seen at least one million times. In this video she criticized Muslims for treating non-Muslims differently, and for not recognizing the accomplishments of Jewish and other members of non-Muslim society while using their wealth and technology. The video was the most discussed video of all time with over 260,000 comments on the video-sharing website YouTube.
Watch as her incisive logic literally blows away al-Qassem and al-Khouli.
