Fulano’s Factoids

Between October 2009 and May 2010 Californians on welfare used their CalWORKs state-issued debit cards to withdraw $1.8 million from California casinos and card rooms. The CalWORKs program is designed to provide money to low-income families for housing, food and clothing.

A Los Angeles Times report also found California’s poor spent $69 million from January 2007 through May 2010 using their state debit cards on at least 14 cruise ships sailing from Miami and other ports, at Florida’s Walt Disney World, in Hawaii and Guam, and at hotels on the Las Vegas Strip.
